Book Clubs choosing NO LONGER AFRAID for 2011 Reading Lists

January 20, 2011

I couldn’t be more thrilled! The Director of the Hazel Mackin Community Library has invited to me discuss NO LONGER AFRAID with the Roberts, Wisconsin, book club. I will be available to sign copies of my book at 6:00 p.m. and then I’ll lead the discussion beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the library. If you don’t belong to that book club, but want to join us, feel free to do so. The more, the merrier! (My own book club has been invited to join them and some may show up, but I’m pretty sure they are sick and tired of me and my book by now! After all, they were the first ones to read it a year ago as one of our selections and have had to listen to me talk about it ever since!)

Happy Valentines Day from my dear friend, Patty Murphy! She has invited me to discuss NO LONGER AFRAID with her Ellsworth, Wisconsin, book club. I’ll be there at 6:30, Patty! I expect there will be chocolate!

March 16, 2011

I’m a happy, happy girl! Former River Falls’ resident and St. Croix County literacy advocate, Catherine Leitch, has invited me to discuss NO LONGER AFRAID with her Sun City West P.E.O. chapter book club. Since I belong to a local chapter, I’m particularly happy to be able to visit with them. Of course, my oldest daughter, son-in-law, and three grandchildren in Scottsdale will also be blessed by my visit! I think I’ll bring my husband along for the ride, too.

My first signing at the dedication of the HAZEL MACKIN COMMUNITY LIBRARY was nothing short of amazing. The heartfelt speeches of passionate supporters, the presentation of a beautiful building, and a huge crowd made for a crowning success. The citizens of Roberts, Wisconsin, should be very proud. I signed twenty copies of NO LONGER AFRAID and was invited to join a book club discussion of my very own book. What more could I ask for? Well, more signings!

Grand Re-Opening Celebration at ATTITUDES SALON, Hammond, WI, November 20th.

ATTITUDES SALON will have an open house from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. I’ll be there to sign NO LONGER AFRAID from noon until 2 p.m. This signing is especially significant because Attitudes Salon is a very conscientious member of Salons Against Domestic Violence, and since my heroine is a survivor of this disgusting brutality, we are a perfect match! The CLEAR LAKE HOLIDAY EXPO at Lucky’s, Clear Lake, WI, December 4th.

Linda and Harry Tronrud will be hosting the Clear Lake Holiday Expo again this year. The Expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. You’ll find it the perfect place to buy many of your holiday gifts and then indulge in a one-of-a-kind Lucky Burger while you are at it. Lucky’s is located in the heart of downtown Clear Lake at 458 3rd Avenue and parking spaces are plentiful. I will be there with copies of NO LONGER AFRAID (a heartwarming, eye-opening tale for women of all ages) happily sharing a table with my daughter, Stacy Zignego, and her beautiful, hand-beaded watchbands.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Dedication of the Hazel Mackin Community Library

If you live in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area and are free on the evening of October 30th, take a nice fall drive on I-94 and over the St. Croix to exit 10, turn right, and head into Roberts. The Hazel Mackin Community Library will be on your right.

The Dedication will be from 3:30 to 5:30, and I have been invited to be there to sign books. It will be my first signing, so you know how excited I am. I’ll see you there.

Home from European vacation!

Jim and I were gone from the 13th to the 28th of September on a whirlwind tour of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Northern Italy, and Slovakia…otherwise known as the Alpine Countries of Europe. We covered over 2,000 miles on a wonderful, brand new tour bus with Globus Journeys. There were 40 of us from all over the world…a great bunch of people. When I can figure out how to get a few pictures on this site, I will download some.

This was the third Globus tour we’ve taken with Jim’s sisters, Linda and Barb. We will try another one in a couple of years. So now we’ve toured France, Italy, and the countries mentioned above. We were well taken care of each and every time including lodging in beautiful hotels, devouring wonderful meals, and taking fantastic excursions. Barb volunteered to be my very discrete marketing director. If anyone even asked what we did for a living, Barb would hand them my card. One of our traveling companions, Mary, was so excited to meet a budding author that she gave me a huge hug. She became the one traveler that received a copy of the book…autographed, of course. She was the right one to give it to because every time we were together, she would sidle up next to me and tell me about this “great book she was reading”. So, I got to do a little marketing, but kept it at a minimum…I didn’t want to take away from the wonderful travel experience.

I can’t remember who said it, but one of my traveling companions mentioned that I should make sure that one of my characters travels to Europe…maybe on a honeymoon or something (Mac and Maggie or maybe Claire). I would make sure that my characters got to Switzerland…the land of my ancestors. I’d have them begin their adventure at St. Moritz, then travel up the Alps to see the Matterhorn from the quaint village of Zermatt and then head back down to Northern Italy and the Mediterranean-like areas of Lake Como, Lake Lugano and Lake Maggiore…magical places, almost tropical compared to the snow covered mountains around the Matterhorn.

So you see, the trip gave me some more ideas for book two. Claire ran around in my head during the long bus rides; I got some great scenes flushed out and scribbled down in my notebook. Now, I have to find the time to get them typed up. Winter will be here before we know it, so I should be able to get some great writing done then.

Talk to you soon.

Welcome to my new website!

NO LONGER AFRAID has been embraced by book clubs around Western Wisconsin. In fact, members of my own club were the first to encourage me to publish; we have been discussing books together since 1983.  They had so much faith in me that they included the book on our reading list for 2010, right along with authors such as Kathryn Stockett, Barbara Kingsolver, and Jeannette Wall.
