Enough with the Secrets is published

Enough with the Secrets is finished…finally. After many title changes and many more edits, it is ready for my readers to enjoy. The print copy is available at lulu.com, and the ebook is ready to go at Amazon.com. Enjoy!

Initially, I was driven to write this book because there was one character in No Longer Afraid who continued to push her way into my consciousness…Maggie’s estranged mother, Claire.

Claire’s character came as an unexpected surprise while I was writing book one. Originally, I had planned for her to live in her daughters’ memories, but she came alive and became a pivitol character in No Longer Afraid. I had no choice but to write more about her. I just couldn’t leave her stranded with no story of her own.

I know you will come to love her. You won’t be able to help it after you read her compelling story. It’s Kate’s turn to have her story told in book three, but I may have to keep Claire’s story going strong. After all, now that she’s the family matriarch once again, she won’t be keeping her opinions to herself for long.

Shelf Unbound

I love my Writer’s Digest magazine and read it from cover to cover. There is so much information for writers, published and otherwise, that it is a “must read”.
For example, this month an online magazine entitled “Shelf Unbound” was advertised. I checked it out and subscribed immediately. It keeps readers on top of the latest trends in writing for independent authors and small presses such as boutique publishers. I have entered their constest for self-published books and am sending book one in for a review.
I haven’t been this excited in a long time. It’s moving me forward with book two “Enough with the Secrets”. Yes, readers, I changed the name again; however, I’m sticking with this one unless a publisher tells me otherwise.
Check out Shelf Unbound; you won’t be disappointed.

FanFiction.Net

I recently learned about a website that allows an author to upload chapters or completed books so that people can read them for free. Some might think that it doesn’t sound like a smart thing to do, but after a book has been out for awhile, it’s another way to find readers. In addition, readers are linked to authors’ websites and book reviewers take a look at their work and let them know what they should consider changing to maximize publishing potential.
No Longer Afraid will make an appearance shortly, and I hope that I get some good reviews. If I do, I’ll post them on my website. Book two will not be uploaded unless I find that it’s a way to get reviews before I publish it. Take a look at FanFiction.Net and see it there is something there you would like to read.

Readings from Book Two at Urban Olive and Vine

If you publish independently, your work is cut out for you. You are going to be just plain invisible unless you understand that it’s all about networking.

This past July, an independent bookstore opened in Hudson, Wisconsin, so I put my marketing hat on and headed that way. I met Brian Roegge, gave him a copy of No Longer Afraid, and asked if he’d sell it in his store. He told me that he or his wife would have to read it first since I published it myself.

A couple of weeks later, I got an email from his wife, Sue. She thanked me for dropping off my book, she thought it was a wonderful story, and she offered to sell it in her store.
Needless to say, I was thrilled.

A couple of months later, Sue called to say that Urban Olive and Vine, a lovely restaurant owned by Kay Timm in historic downtown Hudson would be offering afternoon teas on Sundays in cooperation with Sue’s Chapter2Books. Sue would come up with the authors or presentations of interest to women. Kay would offer high tea (tea with sandwiches and dessert) or a la carte menu items to the women coming in for the presentations. A partnership was born.

Sue asked me if I would like to set a date to speak at one of the Sunday afternoon teas, and I didn’t turn her down. The date was set for December 4, 2011 from 2 to 4 in the afternoon. After I got off the phone, I began to worry. Why? Because I wondered if anyone would show up to hear about a book that’s been around for a year and a half, a book that all the book clubs have already read and so forth. I didn’t want Sue to order books she couldn’t sell, and I also didn’t want Kay to lose any money on the deal either.

It was then that I decided this would be the perfect time to start marketing Book Two. I just finished the second book in my series Home to Lake Louise with the working title of Enough with the Secrets. I’m going to spend some time looking for a publisher so it won’t be available for awhile, but I sure would enjoy talking about this project and reading some excerpts to anyone who is interested in finding out why Maggie’s mother, Claire, abandoned her daughters forty years earlier.

The Art and Science of Creating a Novel

Sometime last fall, Jill Goodrich, director of Baldwin-Woodville Community Education, asked me if I would like to develop and deliver a course based on my experiences as a writer and self-published author. I had already begun speaking to book clubs about NO LONGER AFRAID, so I had some idea about where to go with this. Jill came up with the clever title, THE ART AND SCIENCE OF CREATING A NOVEL, and I got to work. I decided to talk about why I was meant to write this particular story and what it took to get my ideas down on paper. Of course, I know how difficult it is to find a publisher and how much harder it is to publish independently, so I’m certain I’ll have no problem talking about that. And, for those who are interested, I want you to know that I’ll continue searching for a fit for my series. I entered the Penguin Books contest for independently published authors this month and, when the time comes, I hope to find a publisher for the second book in my series. Long story short, I’ll be at the Baldwin-Woodville High School on February 15th and 22nd from 6:30 to 8 p.m. If you’d like to join us, call 715-688-6200 to register.
